Charlie/Sarah/Claire, you know that awesome cover that you guys do of [fill-in-the-blank]?
I love how you guys do that song. Now which album is it on?”
Unless you’re asking about our cover of
George and Ira Gershwin’s “Summertime” [for which the physical
albums are out of print, but you can still download it on iTunes], that song that you
love so much is not actually on one of our albums. There are a couple of reasons
for this—
- When you have several songwriters in one band, you have an abundance of original songs to be recorded. In order to make sure that nobody’s ego gets too bruised, you have to use any available song slots on an album to showcase one of your bandmates’ songs to keep the peace.
Really,
we’re just kidding about that part. This is closer to the real reason…
- When you have to spend an exorbitant amount of money making an album, you’re more likely to make an album of your own songs. Why would you go broke making an album of other people’s songs just to garner royalties money for someone else?
Unless
they’re really good songs that you love so much that you just keep on coming
back to the idea and can’t let it go...
Such is true for the Sarah Mac Band and a collection
of lovely cover songs that we’ve developed over our 11 years of playing together.
We’ve played and tweaked these songs so much over time that some of them
feel like our own by now. It doesn’t even bother us that we didn’t
write them, we’re proud of them and want to showcase them. It works out well
because now when you ask which album they’re on, we’ll be able to pick
it up out of our merchandise suitcase and show it to you.
